In the Field: Before America Leaves: A Final Accounting in Afghanistan

The purpose of my reporting project in Afghanistan is a final accounting of America’s war here, as measured in part by the objective metrics of progress—roads built, markets opened, provinces pacified—but also by what’s going on inside the minds of the people. The latter is, I think, the more interesting measure of success, and potentially the more relevant one if we are really concerned about this business of “hearts and minds.” Not that the two aren’t related: A building left to linger with overt signs of war, and the emotional state of all those who walk by it everyday, are not independent phenomena. Physical infrastructure and state of mind are not the same thing, but they are intimately, irrevocably related.
